Berkeley Student Cooperative Lowers Rent Again

For the second year in a row, rent went down for Co-op members, with the Board of Directors voting at its annual budget meeting to lower rent at the houses by 1.07% for the 2013-2014 year.

The cost of living in the BSC’s cooperative room and board houses for the coming Fall and Spring semester will be $3,318 per semester, down from $3,354 this past year.  This works out to around $737 a month, and includes food and utilities.

Rent at the Co-op apartments was increased by just 1.01% - roughly half the rate of inflation.  The cost to live in a shared BSC apartment depends on the apartment type and start as low as $460 a month.  (Co-op Apartment rates are increasing as part of a 5-year process to equalize the allocation of central level expenses).  In contrast, private apartments in Berkeley average saw rent increases of 6-8% last year, and a 2-bedroom apartment averages $1,600 a month.

In addition to low rents, BSC housing staff offer many other services to make it easier for students to find and afford housing.  Unlike private apartments, fraternities or sororities, there is no interview process.  Every house has compensated manager positions, and there are central level member jobs as well.  Rent can be paid via credit card, and deferred payment arrangements are available for members waiting for financial aid or other income.

The BSC also gives priority to students receiving scholarships through the UC Berkeley Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and other scholarship programs, students with disabilities, and international students studying abroad.  Please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots.
