Member Resource Newsletter

July 22, 2016

by Dean Gorissen

Welcome! I thought it was fitting to start the newsletter with this piece--"The Art of Storytelling." It uses books as flat buildings "to make you think about the stories behind each of those windows". Do you know the stories behind your windows? Our cooperatives have been around for awhile, some are over 100 years old I encourage y'all to sit and think about that for a bit.

A few days back, I found
this 1942 radio broadcast, talking about our co-ops and how it took a student fainting from malnutrition to spur the establishment of the co-ops.

"Students and faculty together made an investigation. They found that many other students were just barely managing to keep from starvation [back in 1933]. A
meeting was called by Harry Kingman of the University Y.M.C.A...and at this
meeting plans were laid for the first cooperative organization.
"

What a trip.
Check that
broadcast out, and scroll on to learn about some great cooperative job opportunities we have for you! And don't forget to submit the secret word here, after you've read through the newsletter. Maybe you'll win two tickets to the CZ-Ridge Block Party in September!

3 EXPANDED BUSINESS HOURS PASSES CITY COUNCIL

Councilmember Jesse Arreguin's item to let businesses on Northside and Downtown remain open later passed the city council earlier this month.  The Planning Commission is expected to take up the issue within the nextfew months before sending it back to the City Council for final approval.  While the proposal for Northside was unfortunately watered-down to only be an additional hour, it still represents an important win and can be amended to be better at the Planning Commission.

Thank you to everyone who sent in letters in support of the item.
