Apply to be a Consent Working Group (CWG) Facilitator!

WRITTEN BY ESME COHEN (Consent Working Group Chair)

The CWG was established Spring 2016 in order to create and facilitate consent peer education in every BSC unit. Our group was created with the understanding that consistent, quality peer education around issues of consent, sexual harassment and sexual violence (SHSV), power and privilege are necessary to creating and maintaining cooperative cultures of consent. Collectively, we have now created several workshops based on consent, but remain flexible to cater to different house environments. In fact, maintaining the ability to tailor our workshops to different coop communities is one of our main priorities in education. Facilitators are student residents who deliver consent workshops to units across Berkeley, working to encourage a respectful and productive dialogue within individual houses.

You could join us! Apply today, and help ensure BSC residents have access to quality consent education and consent remains a crucial aspect of the cooperative experience.

The Struggle for People’s Park: Fall 2021 DeCal Class

WRITTEN BY JOSH LAVINE (Cooperative Experience Consultant)

The Free Speech Movement and the struggle for People’s Park in Berkeley was a historic moment to challenge authoritarianism within our University, City, and the world at large. The counter-revolutionary culture at Berkeley challenges the question of what is morally just, how to eliminate poverty, and how to reverse the "status quo" known as "the machine."

Peoples Park has eluded the University's development for 52 years and we challenge students to utilize maps, models, and spatial analysis to understand and predict what these patterns might lead to. You will have the opportunity to reflect on what you have learned through lectures, class discussions, projects, and case studies within and beyond the classroom. The 2020's is an era where the concepts of democratic principles and freedoms of expression face technological challenges, political polarization, and resource inequities. By the end of our semester, you will have established a humane alternative to "the machine" being guided by mini-design activities that will have lasting impacts for Peoples Park and the University of California, Berkeley.

Class begins September 3rd (10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) sign up by September 10th:Apply to take part in The Struggle for Peoples Park: Fall 2021 DeCal Class by filling out this Google Form.
