We know better now

Dear Members:
We acknowledge the difficulties and challenges that our members have experienced. The pandemic has magnified the lack of equity and unconscious biases to many of our minority, POC, black, and brown members.

Please accept my sincerest apology. My leadership is new at the BSC, but I want to take full accountability for these matters. This apology is not without action. I am collaborating and deploying new strategies and conditions to be more effective. Housing is a fundamental human right. It should be affordable, safe, well placed, and sheltered.

Additionally, I want to parse out some of the visioning and remedies that are the action items. These are items that are actionable and will be recommended to the board (some already recommended):

This is only the start of the hard work and needed transition to serve our rich and diverse community. I am humbled and honored with the trust that you have granted me. I do not take my responsibilities lightly or casually. I am energized and motivated to help and inspire all of the members of the BSC. I am excited about the future and will serve the members and staff without yielding.

Please do not hesitate to contact me any time at

Warmest Regards,
Teena Lorie

Do you need someone to talk to or just a good listener?

WRITTEN BY MADELEINE LOH (Development Director)

Russ Button (BSC Member in the 1970s) is a Chaplain Intern at Kaiser Hospital and was recently ordained by The Chaplaincy Institute of Berkeley as an Interfaith Minister and Chaplain. The work of interfaith chaplain is to be a listener for people of all faith traditions and those of no faith tradition as well. It is not the role of chaplain to preach religion, but we are to be present for those who are facing a spiritual crisis such as the grief one has at the death of someone they love—a family member, lover or close friend. Crisis of spirit can also come from questioning the path in life one is walking. Russ Button is available to be present for and listen to BSC members experiencing grief or crisis. Contact Russ Button if you are experiencing grief or crisis.
