Habitability Awards
WRITTEN BY TAVI OEHMKE (Habitability Coordinator)
Overall
With very few exceptions, every unit in the BSC either improved in their habitability or remained stable. This is the first time in recorded memory that the average score on habitability inspections for all the houses in summer was higher than the average grade the preceding spring. We hope that all the habitability coordinators, manager teams, and members who made this happen are extremely proud of themselves for their caring and dedicated stewardship of their homes; we are extremely proud of them. There is still work to be done, and we look forward to working with the units to address it, but this summer was truly an incredible achievement.
Most Improved Large House
Winner: Stebbins Hall (+1.68 points, C to A-)
Stebbins made an incredible jump this semester, going from a C to an A-. We have not said “wow” so many times during an inspection. By the combined efforts of the habitability coordinator, manager team, and members, the house tackled a challenging dishpit situation from Spring: this summer, we found their kitchen devoid of dirty dishes. They improved every aspect of habitability. In the words of one proud Stebbins member: “that’s what’s up. do not underestimate stebbins. lizards 4 lyfe.”
Runner up: Casa Zimbabwe
Most Improved Small House
Winner: Wilde House (+0.94 points, C+ to B+)
Wilde improved four out of five categories, with particular improvements to their basement in terms of both organization and cleanliness. Their free pile, which was completely cleaned out and reorganized, represents great work on the part of their members, manager team, and habitability coordinator. They also dealt with some challenging issues in their basement bathrooms, and systems for dealing with bathroom trash. We are extremely proud of all the work that these members have put in this summer.
Runner up: Wolf House
Best Large House
Winner: Stebbins Hall (3.62, A-)
We repeat: “that’s what’s up. do not underestimate stebbins. lizards 4 lyfe.” With at least an A- in four of five categories, Stebbins was also our best large house. We were extremely impressed by their exterior, which received one of our only full As in this section this semester: the plants in front of their house are happy and well-cared for, their vents are all sealed to prevent pest entry, and their walkways are free of trip or slip hazards. Congratulations to Stebbins, who are also our first house in two semesters to win the award for Best and Most Improved house simultaneously.
Runner up: Hillegass Parker House (3.46, B+)
Best Small House
Winner: Tie between The Convent & Euclid Hall (3.8, A-) (Best overall)
The Convent and Euclid Hall are tied for best this semester, both receiving A- overall grades. The Convent has the best bathrooms across the entire BSC; they received one of the few full As we’ve given in any category. No notes. Euclid’s common spaces were extremely well kept; they received full As in their exterior, fire safety, and interior general sections, showing an incredible amount of dedication in removing a stubborn patch of bamboo from their backyard. Congratulations to both houses! Yay!
Runner up: Afro House (3.74, A-)
