Cloyne Court

Cloyne is the BSC’s substance-free and academically themed house, available exclusively to UC Berkeley students.

Built in 1904 by John Galen Howard, who also designed Sather Tower, Memorial Stadium, and the Doe Memorial Library, Cloyne Court was originally a residential hotel for visiting professors and faculty, becoming a student coop in 1946. It was designated as an Historical Landmark in 1992 and established as substance-free in 2014, adopting a strict no alcohol, tobacco, or narcotics policy.

Located on the same block as UC Berkeley's Goldman School of Public Policy, Cloyne is the closest BSC house to campus. Situated in Berkeley’s North Side, we share the neighborhood with several other BSC houses.

Dinner is served Sunday through Friday with brunch on Saturdays. Members, called Clones, who like to cook for themselves have access to communal groceries and a commercial kitchen. Cloyne’s spacious dining room seats 100 but most members prefer to eat outside in our courtyard. Rent covers fully furnished rooms, utilities, high-speed internet, food, and meals.

Cloyne is designed to support academics with four dedicated study rooms and extended quiet hours. We also have an Academic Coordinator who regularly arranges academic events such as house talks with Berkeley professors, advice seminars from alumni, and organized study groups.

Cloyne features a large courtyard with picnic tables and an outdoor movie theater. Inside, there are several comfortable common spaces for socializing, meetings, studying, or watching TV. For recreation, Cloyne has a basketball/volleyball court, an indoor gym, a pool table, a game room, three pianos, a crafting space, and a music room.

Throughout the year, Cloyne hosts dances, musical performances, improv shows, holiday celebrations, and the annual Cloyne Carnival, encouraging a vibrant and inclusive community life.
